I love Man Ray’s works.

I’m reading a short text called Dream Kitsch by Walter Benjamin.

These tears.

It would be kitsch.

Picasso’s crying woman may also be kitsch.

The reason I’m crying tonight may be kitsch tomorrow morning.

Man Ray’s ‘Glass tears’ seems to form a barrier against our real emotions and yet if we believe that this image followed on from his break up with Lee Miller, then it takes on a different, more personal meaning.

I find this reading telling, because it suggests that the ‘kitsch’ tears are a form of defence- we are often afraid to show our real emotions. If we take away the ‘fake tears’, how would we read this image – distressed, contemplative, wistful? Benjamin’s notion of kitsch is also associated with love, which he feels is often misunderstood – yet ultimately we lean towards hope, rather than despair, hopefully!

    Dear Pamela,
Your note gave me a great hint. Thank you!

Man Ray was a Virgo. Benjamin was a Cancer.
They must treat tears in different ways.

I’m not sure I totally understand Benjamin’s text, however, I like his sentimentalism. It touches my emotion.
