I mentioned Jonathan Livingston Seagull on March 30th. I read it the version of the translation by Hiroyuki Itsuki on time. I don’t have the book anymore. So, I ordered it at Amazon. But, this time, I ordered it in the English original. I received it today. It is second hand but good shape. It’s only $8. I think it is a good buy.
3月30日のブログでかもめのジョナサンについて言及した。私はそれの五木寛之訳をその当時読んだんだけど、もうその本は持ってない。だから、アマゾンで注文した。今回は英語のオリジナルで読もうと思った。届いたんだけど、中古品だけどいい感じ。これで８ドル。いい買い物したと思う。
Then, this book cover reminded me a Japanese tobacco peace.
この表紙、日本のタバコのピースを思い出させた。
Peace’s logo was designed by Raymond Loewy. He also design Lucky strike.
ピースのパッケージデザインはRaymond Loewy。彼はラッキーストライクのデザインも手掛けてる。
When I was a young, Lucky strike was loved by young people. In Japan, I think smoking could start from the age of 20, but people start a much younger generation. After 20, my friends hesitated to smoke Lucky Strike. I think because the design and name are both too cheerful.
私が若かった頃は、ラッキーストライクは若者に好まれてた。日本では喫煙は２０歳からだったと思うけど、でも、みんなその前から吸ってた。２０歳を過ぎたら、私の友達はラッキーストライクを吸うのをためらった。それは、パッケージのデザインも名前も元気過ぎるからだと思う。
So they reluctantly smoked Seven Stars.
それで、彼らは仕方なくセブンスターとか吸ってた。
My art college professor, Hirosada Kotani loved Peace. He was cool. I learned from him a lot, not only art. He talked to me about music and Literature and so on.
私の美術の教授、古谷博貞先生はピースを愛してた。彼はカッコ良かった。昭和のダンデイですな。彼から色々学んだ。美術だけじゃなくて音楽とか文学の事も。

Caran D’ache Pencil-sharpening Machine arrived. I tried using it immediately.
カランダッシュの鉛筆削りが届いたので、早速使って見た。
Amazing…!
すげえ、、、。
And then, it is reminded me that the reason I didn’t have a Pencil-sharpening Machine. It can sharpen pencils too much. It could waste my color pencils.
で、気づいたんだけど、何で鉛筆削り持ってなかったって言うと、削りすぎるから、色鉛筆が勿体無いのだ。
When I was young, I always cut my pencils by a cutter knife. Nowadays, I cut them by a cheap little Pencil Sharpener which doesn’t work very well.
若かった時は、カッターナイフで削ってた。最近は安い小さな鉛筆削りを使ってた。それが、削れないんだよね〜。
I feel I have grown old.
歳をとったんだな、って思う。
It is troublesome to cut with a cutter knife.
カッターナイフで削るのめんどくさい。

I bought a bunch of sunflowers. I thought this strong yellow because I thought they could cheer me up. However, thinking of Van Gogh…it didn’t cheer him up. Right? Actually, he went insane. But, maybe he was not mad.
１束のひまわりを買った。この強い黄色が私を元気にしてくれるような気がして、でも、ゴッホのことを考えたら、それは彼を元気にしなかったよね？彼は正気を失って、でも、多分、正気は失ってなかった。
It was a beautiful day today, very spring-like.
今日は春らしい美しい日でした。

朝食にイングリッシュブレックファストを作った。
I watched the Queen’s speech on TV unexpectedly.
思いがけずにクイーンのスピーチをテレビで見た。
I’m glad that Queen is in good shape. I respect her.
クイーンが健康そうで、ご立派なので嬉しかった。尊敬する。
So, without any plan, today was English day for me.
なので、予定してなかったけど、今日はイギリスの日になりました。
Can you believe? She is 93!
彼女、９３歳だよ！マジか？

この写真、A&D Galleryのヘレンから昨日届いた。
I am a regular customer of Fiat Cafe. It is near my apartment. Anne Marie, she is a partner of the owner, she concern I am traveling for our laundry and she said she can wash it for me. Her apartment has a washing machine. It’s rare in New York City.
私がよく行くFiat Cafe のアンマリーが私が洗濯で苦しんでる事を心配してくれてて、何と、NYCでは珍しい事に、彼女のアパートには洗濯機があるから洗ってくれると言う。
However, there are underwear too. So, I hesitated to take her kindness for a long time.
だけど、洗濯物の中には下着もあるし、私はずっと遠慮してた。
But, she said oh, no, we are friend why don’t you let me wash your stuff. It’s nothing for me.
だけど、彼女は、私達、友達じゃない、何で遠慮すんの？大したことじゃないでしょ。と。
She is exactly like the person in the picture which Helen send to me.
そんな彼女はまさに、ヘレンが送ってくれた絵のような人。
Therefore, I asked her to wash little bit of my laundry.
だから、少しだけ、彼女に洗ってもらったよ。
Her partner also runs a hotel nearby. For now, all hotels are closed in NYC. Today, He said to me today; I can give you the hotel key. There is a washing machine and you can use it.
彼女のパートナーは近所でホテルも経営している、今はニューヨークでは全てのホテルが閉店になっている。その彼女のパートナーが、今日、ホテルに洗濯機あるから、鍵あげるからそこで洗濯したら？と、言ってくれた。
I deeply appreciated his offer. However, I have to consider taking his offer because I don’t want to make any trouble. The NYPD has been patrolling the city. They are nervous about all the business situation. If they saw I enter the hotel… What will they act next?
私はそんなこと言って貰えて、すんごい感謝してる。でも、考えなくちゃいけない。今は、ニューヨーク警察がパトロールしてまわってる。もし、関係者じゃない私がそのホテルに入るのを見たら？彼らは完全営業停止を命令できちゃうよ。

This chunk. This is our laundry. We don’t have a washing machine at home. But, all of our laundromats in our neighborhood have been closing. I am lucky enough. A laundry near my studio is still open. I went there and picked it up. This one weighs 20 pounds.
この塊。私たちの洗濯物なんですけど、うちには洗濯機が無く、近所の洗濯屋さんは全部しまってしまった。でも、私は幸運な事に自分の仕事場のそばの洗濯屋さんは空いてる！そこに持って行って、持って帰って来たこれは、２０ポンドあります。
For your information: Normally, apartments in New York City, don’t have a washing machine in each household. Usually, each building has a washing machine in the basement, and people share it. But our building doesn’t have it.
注：ニューヨークのアパートの各家庭には洗濯機はない。大抵、洗濯機はビルの地下にあって共同で使う。しかし、わたしたちのビルにはそれはない。
However, it is too much. There is one hour’s walk back and forth. After I came back home, I am exhausted. I couldn’t cook our supper. I made a salad. but, ダン蔵 said it’s okay, let eat canned soup. So, tonight we ate salad and soup. Healthy？
でもこれ、ひどすぎ。往復一時間かかるんだもん。家に帰ったら疲れて夕食作れなかった。サラダ作ったんだけど、ダン蔵がいいよ、夕食は缶のスープにしよう。って言ってくれた。だから、今夜はサラダとスープ。健康的かも？
